Ollie’s Music World is a narrative-driven music education framework that uses storytelling, character, and creative musicianship to engage students in meaningful musical experiences. Rooted in elementary education, it expands seamlessly into advanced musicianship, songwriting, and ensemble collaboration for learners of all ages.
My work in elementary music education is not separate from middle school or high school instruction, it is the foundation for it. By developing students’ creativity, musical literacy, and sense of ownership at an early age, I prepare them to engage more deeply in ensemble performance, composition, and collaborative musicianship as they grow.

Ollies Music Machine
Jungle Mode
Jungle Mode is the primary setting on Ollie’s Machine, allowing students to connect directly with Ollie and his world through music-making. When activated, Jungle Mode “opens the portal” between the classroom and Ollie’s jungle, teleporting Ollie or one of his musical friends into the learning space.
Activation of the machine is always musical. Students must work together to complete a short musical task, such as singing a familiar call song, echoing a rhythmic pattern, or performing a rhythm randomizer challenge. These tasks are developmentally appropriate and aligned with the lesson objective, reinforcing skills like steady beat, rhythm reading, and ensemble awareness.
Once the class successfully performs the activation sequence, the machine is “powered,” and Jungle Mode is engaged. Ollie (or another character) is then teleported into the classroom, where the lesson continues through guided musical interaction, storytelling, and creative play.
Jungle Mode establishes a consistent and engaging ritual that blends imagination with musicianship. It reinforces the idea that music has purpose and power, when students create music together, they unlock new experiences, characters, and learning opportunities.
Shrink Mode
Shrink Mode uses dynamics to explore how volume and control shape musical expression. When activated, students discover that music can “change size” by performing with intentional contrast between loud and soft sounds.
To charge the machine, students engage in a focused musical task that emphasizes dynamic control. This may include singing a cultural or class song with varied dynamics, performing rhythmic patterns on instruments, or using a rhythm randomizer with voice and body percussion. Students are guided to perform with precision, gradually softening or strengthening their sound as a unified ensemble.
As the class demonstrates control over dynamics, the machine becomes fully powered. When Shrink Mode is engaged, a character placed inside the machine is “shrunk,” reinforcing the connection between soft sound and small size. This moment provides both a visual and imaginative representation of dynamic contrast.
Shrink Mode builds expressive musicianship by helping students internalize the relationship between sound and intention. Through ensemble awareness and careful listening, students learn that controlling volume is not just about being quieter or louder, it is about shaping musical meaning together.
Ollie^X – Multiply Mode
Multiply Mode (Ollie^X) explores rhythmic subdivision by reimagining how music can expand and multiply. In this setting, students discover how a single sound can divide into many, just as one Ollie can become many.
To activate the machine, students perform rhythmic patterns that demonstrate subdivision. Beginning with larger note values (such as whole and half notes), students progressively divide the beat into smaller units, quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes, through clapping, instruments, or voice using rhythm syllables or a rhythm randomizer. As the rhythms become more intricate, the energy of the machine builds.
Once fully charged, Multiply Mode is engaged. A single Ollie placed in the machine is multiplied, creating multiple “Ollies” that can be distributed throughout the classroom. This imaginative transformation reinforces the concept that as rhythms divide, musical possibilities expand.
With many Ollies now present, each student is supported in their own musical role, whether performing a rhythm, maintaining the beat, or contributing to a layered ensemble. Multiply Mode emphasizes independence within the group, helping students understand how individual parts come together to form a complete musical texture.
Through this process, students experience subdivision not just as a concept, but as a living system, where one idea can grow, divide, and multiply into something greater.
